Ruins II

Ruins is an audiovisual installation that explores the relationship between women composers’ work, its perceived value and the factors that lead to it being eroded from our cultural memory. The project draws on the work and lives of three 19th-century French composers — Marie Jaëll, Clémence de Grandval and Augusta Holmès — and considers the impact of beauty, pseudonyms and self-doubt.

Ruins: Sound Art, Voice and Gender

The installation Ruins was created during the Arts Council England Developing Your Creative Practice ‘Ruins: Sound Art, Voice and Gender’ project. Taking place over 7 months, the project allowed a mentorship period with sound artist and academic Linda O’Keefe and a collaboration with the designer Denitsa Toneva. The project allowed a period of creative research in which acoustic ecology, feminist sound art history - with a particular focus on Pauline Oliveros - and sound-mapping were explored. This led to a series of creative workshops that centred around online-mediated sound walks, field recording sessions and editing techniques such as granular synthesis.
